Since the early 1990s Kraze One has been an active participant in several of Hip Hop’s elements and has contributed to a number of different projects as a graffiti artist, rap vocalist, turntablist, producer and events organiser. In the first of a series of articles aimed at documenting Kraze One‘s contributions to local Hip Hop culture we will focus on his founding years during the 1990s and the various projects he initiated while living in Buckingham located on the outskirts of Milton Keynes.

Kraze One discovered Hip Hop culture as a youth during mid 1980s and in his early teens began experimenting with graffiti art and participating in street dancing. In 1991 at age 15 he formed Hip Hop collective UnderCover Prophecy (UCP) with DJ Delta and DJ Trail One. The formation of UCP and the creation of the name tag “Kraze One” marked a change in his relationship towards Hip Hop culture as he began to participate in several of it’s elements. Killa Joul

Killa Joul started rapping and writing lyrics in 1993 while studying at Buckingham sixth form collage where he formed Hip Hop crew Justice Element with DJ Crime Plate and Kraze One. As the 1990s progressed Killa Joul began recording as a solo artist as well as working with MK Hip Hop collective True Element. The purpose of this article is to highlight Killa Joul‘s contributions to the local Hip Hop scene during the 1990s. As the project progresses we will attempt to continue to highlight later achievements.

In 1993 Killa Joul formed Justice Element with DJ Crime Plate and Kraze One. Justice Element progressed from performing at local live shows to creating demo recordings and eventually independently released a cassette tape entitled “The prologue of Buckingham’s innovators” in March 1994. The cassette was recorded and duplicated using very basic equipment but after circulating copies to local DJs and producers Justice Element secured an opportunity to create several studio recordings. Gunstar Hero’s

Gunstar Hero’s was a Jungle/Drum & Bass project that was put together by DJ Trail, DJ Halo and Adam from Redline Records. The collective produced and independently released a 12″ single in 1994 that consisted of three tracks:

  • Did you love me?
  • Come together
  • A vision (Section 12 mix).

The record was distributed via the Redline record shop’s network that was based around an independent dance music specialist located in Bicester town center during the mid 1990s.

Previous to the formation of the Gunstar Hero’s project DJ Halo had established and been an integral member of acclaimed Hip Hop/Dance crew The Criminal Minds. DJ Trail also had a background in the local music scene as a pioneering Jungle DJ and had previously helped established Buckingham Hip Hop collective UnderCover Prophecy. Continue reading →
