Run DMC “Beats to the rhyme freestyle” Live

Here is a great opportunity to see one of hip hop’s most famous groups do what they do best. This footage is from an appearance on Yo MTV Raps in 1992. Jam master Jay starts the set by beat juggling the track “Big Beat” by Billy Squire before dropping in the instrumental to Run DMC’s track “Beats to the rhyme” that is itself based on a breakbeat from a jazz funk composition called “Mardigras” by keyboardist Bob James.

Run and DMC deliver tighter than tight vocals in an outstanding performance. Yo MTV raps was a dedicated hip hop show that ran from August 1988 to August 1995 and played a huge part in bringing hip hop music and culture to a mainstream audience. “Beats to the rhyme” is taken from the Run DMC LP “Tougher than Leather” released in 1988 on Profile records. “Beats to the rhyme” was also the B side to the 12″ single of “Runs House” The 12″ Single also contains the instrumental versions of the of both tracks. “Runs House” would later be used as the theme music for the TV show Runs House.

Reissue of 1988 album, repackaged in a digipak with extensive sleevenotes and rare photos. Arista. 2003.
